Do you ever wake up early to get in a workout? Does reading a good book make you feel productive? These are both forms of wellness. Wellness is a state of well-being that includes a sense of comfort and happiness within oneself. Health and wellness are much more than eating enough fruits and vegetables or reducing screen time. A real wellness journey involves long-term change and effort to form new habits. Every journey begins somewhere, and you can take small steps to prioritize yourself and your well-being.
The Beginning of Your Journey
Change doesn’t need to happen overnight. In fact, most individual wellness journeys are long-term developmental processes. Starting with small changes, such as exercising for 15 minutes daily and drinking more water, can bring about huge changes to your life. Starting a wellness journey for the first time isn’t easy, but with hard work and dedication, you will get there. Developing a positive mindset and embracing growth are key to personal evolution in wellness. Many factors can impact this journey. You need to be accountable and make sense of the obstacles in your life. It’s better to see them as bumps in the road rather than being too hard on yourself. Be flexible and create routines that work for you. Whether you want to work on your mental or physical health, or something else, starting small is always the best way. Start by making changes in your day-to-day routines; these will carry over to more impactful measures, such as developing self-confidence or achieving your dream fitness lifestyle. Remember not to be too hard on yourself, you’re growing! You will make mistakes and learn from them, and that’s ok.
Physical Wellness: Movement, Sleep, and Nutrition
When one thinks of health and wellness, physical health is usually what comes to mind. Maybe you’re working on getting more cardio in daily, or working towards developing a healthier diet. There are all sorts of changes that we can make to our routine to improve physical health. For example, taking up an activity like yoga can add movement to your everyday routine. Yoga helps cleanse both the mind and the body and improves your flexibility. Meditation is also a physical activity that benefits your body, such as lowering your blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health.
The food you eat and the sleep you get also hold significance for your physical health. When you don’t receive enough sleep, your bodily functions don’t work properly. Sleep allows us to replenish our body’s systems and recharge for the next day. Just like sleep, the foods you put in your body can negatively or positively affect physical health. When it comes to food, nutrient-packed meals are your best bet for staying healthy and feeling energized. Well-balanced meals consist of fruits and vegetables, grains, and proteins. Eating fresh food whenever possible is better than consuming overly processed foods. Farmers' markets often offer fresh greens and farm-fresh ingredients that you can use in your everyday meals. Cutting our harmful habits, such as smoking or drinking excessively, is also a great way to be kind to our bodies and treat them well.
Emotional Wellness: Keeping a Stress-Free Mind
Mental health is key to wellness. Emotional health specifically impacts our daily life and our social interactions. We can’t become better friends if we aren’t taking care of and prioritizing our own mental health. Learning how to regulate our emotions is a great step to take towards this journey. When we experience negative emotions, adapting positive coping mechanisms such as breathing techniques or countdowns can help. Emotions significantly impact our mental health because they can cause unwanted stress and anxiety when not managed well. Managing our emotions can also help with overstimulation and emotional overload. Additionally, learning how to cope with stress and improve resilience is key to keeping a positive mindset. It’s best not to ignore your emotions. Identify them, name them, and understand why you are having those experiences. Cognitively, it’s also good to challenge your mind. Maybe this involves learning a new language or taking on a new class at school. Constantly learning new information and pursuing new hobbies is a great way to stay sharp and alert.
Social Wellness: Maintaining the Right Network
Maintaining your social connections and positive relationships is really important for social wellness. Talking to people daily boosts your well-being and can improve your longevity. However, it’s not enough to have these relationships; you also need to make sure your friendships are healthy and positive influences in your life. Social ties should lift you. Friends should be there for you in the good times and the bad. Sometimes it’s difficult to recognize a toxic friendship from a healthy one. Make sure to set healthy boundaries and avoid being a people pleaser. While social connections are important, wellness can be negatively impacted if these connections cause stress and harm. Actively engaging with your community can be another way to boost your own social wellness. Joining clubs or student organizations at school can increase the number of meaningful interactions in your life. Frequent these events to repeat a routine and see people more often. Make sure to set aside time for texts, phone calls, and FaceTime with your family and friends. Even just a short amount of time calling and texting people daily helps keep up those special relationships in your life.
Environmental Wellness: Healthy Surroundings
No one can thrive in their wellness journey if they are not surrounded by strength and positivity. Environmental wellness has multiple components and may include both physical and emotional surroundings. For example, maybe you are choosing to move closer to the ocean or mountains in order to feel a benefit from the physical environment. Maybe you are moving out of a big city into the country, or doing the opposite. Changing your environment can significantly boost your wellness. However, it isn’t just our natural environment that affects us. Our digital surroundings can also impact us, including our social media and online connections. Whether we spend a few minutes or an hour or more every day on social media platforms can impact our digital environment. Having healthy digital habits and staying off social media can help create a better environment. Natural and organized surroundings can also improve our minds and reduce stress. For example, have you ever felt overwhelmed because of a lack or organizaiton inside your home? Something as simple as cleaning your room and lighting a good-smelling candle can ease your mind and improve your home environment. These small changes can go a long way towards providing a stress-free environment and making you feel comfortable in your surroundings. Maybe you don’t live in your dream natural setting or have a 100% clean and perfect home all the time, and that’s ok. You can take small steps towards surrounding yourself with things you love that help you grow as a person.
Spiritual Wellness: Finding a Stronger Purpose
Spiritual wellness involves finding your purpose and meaning in life, revolving around your beliefs and values. Maybe you feel a strong connection to something higher in life, whether that is a religion or a spiritual presence. A great example of this is incorporating mindfulness and meditation into your life, both of which can help you achieve a higher purpose. Mindfulness can help you practice gratitude and to adjust your mindset to reflect on the past. Learning from our mistakes allows us to grow and move on. Being grateful for what we have in the moment and appreciating the little things will help us on this journey.
