6 Ways to Prevent Burnout for Increased Wellbeing

Ever felt like you don't have as much fuel as you used to? Maybe you’re not as engaged at work? Or struggling to show up in your relationships? This could be a response to consistent demands and stress in your everyday life. Instead of putting on a fake mask pretending everything is okay, consider what’s causing this exhaustion and how you can prevent it.

Burnout is the chronic state of exhaustion, this could be mental, physical, or emotional. Although commonly referenced in work life, the term can be associated within other facets of life.

Creating Work life Balance

Taking care of yourself after working long hours is necessary as it refreshes your mental and physical state. When seeking ways to achieve work-life balance, consider what will nourish you emotionally, mentally, and physically. Some great examples are journaling to write down your emotions, letting your creativity out in any art form you want, reading a book you’ve been wanting to, and using positive affirmations to get out of that negative mindset.

Enjoyably moving your body will help with consistency, rather than making it feel like a punishment, such as taking a walk outside, dancing, or following your own personal workout routine. Creating a routine that fits your needs helps to relieve the anxiety of an unbalanced lifestyle.

Developing Boundaries in Your Social Life

You are allowed to say no. When you say no, you are setting a boundary on what you are limited to, and that’s not a bad thing. You have limited time and energy, and some of that should be spent on things you want to do and what makes you happy, with the people that make you happy. If possible, set firm times for work, prioritize your most important tasks, and don't take on more than you can. With your friends and family, let them know what you are comfortable with and what you are uncomfortable with, because they care about you and will respect your boundaries. You will always have someone in your corner, even when it feels like you’re all alone in a single room. Having your friends and family by your side will lift that heavy weight of loneliness and stress off your shoulders. Learn more about maintaining healthy friendships in this blog.

Preventing Digital Overload

You know what? It really is that phone. The constant need to check your phone and end up doomscrolling for hours increases the chance of burnout and makes you feel like you’ve lost control of your life. Setting the screen aside helps with sleep quality, improves mental health, and productivity. Not checking your phone as the first thing you do when you wake up and setting it aside at least an hour before bed helps prevent high stress and burnout. You get to live in the moment and knock out anything on your to-do list you may have been setting aside. Practicing mindfulness is a great way to detox by helping you to regulate your emotions and focus on the present. One mindfulness intervention is to use the 5-4-3-2-1 technique when anxiety begins to feel overwhelming. This technique is identifying 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This helps you shift your focus to the present and what is in front of you.

Balancing Responsibilities with Self-Care

Everyone has their own responsibilities, unfortunately it’s just something we can’t avoid. However, our whole lives can’t revolve around those responsibilities alone; otherwise, the world is just gonna pass us by. Set aside time for yourself and focus on what your body needs. Don’t forget to pamper yourself with a skincare, bodycare, and haircare routine, whatever relaxes your nervous system and makes you feel great! There’s also nourishing your body with a healthy diet that gives you the energy to take on whatever the day throws at you. Let the creative side of you come out through art and crafts, dance, or music. Whatever you want your self-care routine to be, it’s yours and yours alone.

Embrace Resting and Recharging

Do you lock on to a task and can’t seem to step away until it’s perfect? Feel like it’s never the right time to take a break and take care of yourself? Everyone needs a break from work, school, and life, especially when it feels like too much. Taking a break isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a way for your body to recover and reset. It can be as simple as going for a walk, easy stretching, eating lunch without working, or something that makes you happy. It is okay to step away for a moment and to think about yourself. One of the most important things you can do is be kind to yourself. Burnout can happen to anyone at any time. You’re not a failure by any means, and you have the power to take control of your life.
